What we did this summer

Three Schottland-Vereinigung Board members, Detlef, Rainer and Markus, visited Falkirk as part of a Wissmüller coach tour, bringing whisky from St. Kilian’s Distillers with them, enough to host a very enjoyable whisky-tasting at St. Francis Xavier’s church hall. The week after we entertained the Löw family with a meal at the Sanam, a visit to the Wheel and the Kelpies, a class at Jenkins School of Highland Dancing, and an evening at Falkirk Folk Club.

We had our usual tombola bottle stall at the Airth Highland Games on July 22nd. The weather was much better than forecast and we made a magnificent £465. Thanks to everyone who donated bottles and helped on the stall, especially Isabella who labelled all the bottles and folded hundreds of tickets. Thanks also to the people who manned the gates, and Andy for organising the rota.

In August, a few of us went for dinner at the West Brewery in Glasgow where we ate German-style food like Jägerschnitzel and Apfelstrudel, and drank beer brewed according to the German Purity Laws of 1516.

The next week, we had another two visitors from the Odenwald, Marvin Donig who works with Landrat Frank Matiaske, and his girlfriend, Katyia. They were staying Glasgow but came to Falkirk for a day. Walter and Anne took them to see the Kelpies, the Falkirk Wheel and Callendar House before finishing off by joining one of the coach tours at the Torphichen Inn and enjoying a three course meal with entertainment from Lads wi’ Gear, otherwise known as Walter and Charlie. Luckily, the weather stayed fine for the whole day.

Schottische Nacht took place in the courtyard of Schloss Erbach and local bands The Tonkerers and Glenbervie Folk Duo went across to perform. The evening was a great success, culminating in the Falkirk performers on stage with the Clan Pipers Frankfurt for ‘Auld Lang Syne’.
